Pyschotherapy

Psychotherapy is a general term for treating mental health problems by talking with a therapist. During psychotherapy, you learn about your mental and physical health, your moods, feelings, thoughts and behaviours. Psychotherapy helps you learn how to take control of your life and respond to challenging situations with healthy coping skills.

Psychotherapy can be helpful in treating most mental health challenges, including:

  • Anxiety disorders

  • Mood disorders

  • Addictions

  • Eating disorders

  • Personality disorders

  • Post-Traumatic Stress

It is important to know that you do not need to have a mental illness in order to benefit from psychotherapy.

Psychotherapy can help with a number of life's stressors and conflicts that can affect anyone. For example, it may help you:

Resolve conflicts with your spouse, partner, or someone else in your life

Relieve anxiety or stress due to work or other situations

Cope with major life changes, such as divorce, the death of a loved one or the loss of a job

Learn to manage unhealthy reactions, such as ‘road rage’ or passive-aggressive behavior

Adjusting to a life-threatening or chronic illness (involving you, your child, or someone close to you) such as cancer, an eating disorder, or chronic pain

Recover from physical or sexual abuse or witnessing violence

Although many types of therapies exist, my practice includes the following psychotherapy techniques:

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), which helps you identify unhealthy, negative beliefs and behaviors and replace them with healthy, positive ones.

Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), a type of therapy that teaches life and behavioural skills to help you handle stress, manage your emotions, and improve your relationships with others.

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), teaches "mindfulness," a ‘grounding’ technique that guides people to focus only on things happening in the present moment. Mindfulness is a time to purposefully pay attention and be aware of your surroundings, your emotions, your thoughts, and how your body feels.
